Job Summary

Schedule: Four days per week, 10 hour days.
Pay: Starting pay is around $24 (goes off experience)

The general purpose of the welder assistant position is to repair and maintain maintenance of equipment and/or railcars to ensure Watco and customer quality assurance standards are met. This Welder description is general and illustrative of the type of duties required for this position. This description is not all inclusive and is not meant to be a detailed description of each duty performed by the incumbent but established as a guideline and basis for sound.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform MIG welding with flux core wire. Primary material consists of A36 and A53 carbon steel alloy- Other materials may vary
• Perform different types of welds that consist of but are not limited to butt, lap, tee, horizontal, and overhead welds
• Utilize tools including but not limited to cutting torch, air arc cutter, grinder, and hand tools in all positions without damage to adjoining parts
• Use multiple types of metal fabrication and hand tools in all positions without damage to adjoining parts
• Ensure that all company guidelines are met, and that all safety rules are followed when performing duties
• Maintain written maintenance/repair records
• Ensure that all federal requirements and company guidelines are met, and that all safety rules are followed when performing duties and making car repairs
• Demonstrate basic math & mechanical skills, including reading of a tape measure
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to steel toe boots, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, hot work PPE, fall protection, respirators, and a variety of protective suits

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Must be able to pass and or obtain all reporting, testing, and certifications as required for this position
• Basic knowledge of tools used to weld, cut and torch metal 
• Ability to pass a D15.1 or M1002 weld test which includes a horizontal, vertical, and overhead weld 
• Perform/ prioritize multiple tasks with attention to details. 
• Ability to independently establish work tasks in order to successfully meet expectations
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions including basic blueprints and schematics
• Basic mechanical skills and the ability to read a tape measure 

Education

High School or GED equivalent
