Responsibilities for rail car and track inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities in accordance with DOT regulations, AAR rules and standards, and customer requirements. The mechanical technician may conduct one or more of the following activities:

  • Perform and oversee job safety analysis and ensure workplace safety;
  • Inspect rail cars DOT regulations, AAR rules and standards, and customer requirements;
  • Read written procedures and mechanical drawings;
  • Use a cutting torch in all positions without damage to adjoining rail car parts;
  • Weld rail car components in accordance with AAR rules and standards;
  • Remove and replace defective components on rail cars;
  • Remove and replace service equipment;
  • Perform leakage pressure tests;
  • Perform air brake tests in accordance with AAR Standard S-486;
  • Prepare billing in accordance with AAR and customer requirements;
  • Maintain detailed car files and other records;
  • Perform periodic maintenance to track and structures in accordance with FRA track safety standards;
  • Operate or oversee the operation of heavy equipment; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

  • Developing job safety analysis and ensure workplace safety.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are in good working order and maintain good housekeeping in work area(s).
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with others.
  • Ensure that federal regulations, industry standards, and customer requirements are met.
  • Use cutting torch without damaging adjoining parts.
  • Weld in all positions in accordance with AAR rules and standards.
  • Read and understand blueprints, procedures, and other customer documents.
  • Maintain car files and track repair records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Tank car valve experience and tank car coating experience desired but not required.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • High school education or general education (GED). One or more years of rail car repair job-related experience preferred, but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb ladders and/or cars.
  • Must be able to work at heights above twenty-feet (20) while wearing required safety equipment.
  • Must be able to stand / walk 100% of time.
  • Must be able to distinguish warning sounds or verbal instructions above loud noises 100% of time.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms and or use fingers to feel handle 100% of time.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift at all times.

PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS:

  • The team member is regularly required to exert up to 75 pounds of force, and/or up to 100 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing job duties, the environment contains loud noise, rotating machinery, moving rail cars, hazardous materials in the work place, and airborne particles and fumes from gas, oil, and grease, and welding.
