Hours: Hours may vary weekly.  Mostly 14:00-22:00 Monday-Friday unless department needs warrants change.

 

Pre-Supervisory Requirements

 

  • Team Member must successfully complete the Watco Companies, Inc. General Code of Operating Rules 2-week course and examination.
  • Team Member must successfully complete the Watco Companies, Inc. Rules Governing Train Dispatchers course and examination.
  • Team Member must successfully complete the examination for The United States Hazardous Material Instruction for Rail.
  • Team Member must prove that he or she can successfully and safely dispatch all of the railroads that Watco Companies, Inc. Dispatch Center currently cover.

 

Assistant Chief Dispatcher Duties

 

  • The Assistant Chief Dispatcher works directly under the Chief Dispatcher with daily operations. Also assist dispatchers with their questions, problems and in their duties as well as the control and safe efficient movement of trains, authorizing the occupancy of main track and sidings for train operations, track inspection and maintenance personnel.  Duties may be continued outside of the office via cell phone assisting dispatchers with questions even after normal shift hours if on call.
  •  Assists in screening, evaluating, interviewing and has direct input for selection of new employees within their department.
  • Provides direct input to the manager regarding disciplinary actions, performance reviews that affect in determining wage increases for subordinates.
  • Assisting in training of new dispatchers.
  • Solving problems and unusual occurrences that may appear during the course of a shift.
  • Authorizing the occupancy of main track and sidings by issuing track bulletins and warrants and communicating such authorities to train crews, track crews and others.
  • Monitoring train movement and conditions affecting movements (such as weather conditions, train crew availability, engine and equipment availability, track warrants/bulletins, general orders, timetables, track and speed restrictions, and train classifications), taking indicated actions to assure safety and performance, and coordinating responses to unplanned events and emergency situations.
  • Monitoring, testing, and adjusting the ALTA system and making adjustments as needed when informed too by the ALTA Technicians.
  • Inputting into the ALTA system conditions, train delays, assuring movement of priority trains and coordinating the movement and protection of high/wide loads and special movements.
  • Communicating via telephone or radio with train crews, yard supervisory personnel, Maintenance of Way personnel and others regarding train movements and instructions, train orders and authorities.
  • Taking and reporting incidences of railroad crossing malfunctions and providing proper notifications and protection.
  • Performing various administrative duties relative to hours-of-service requirements, hazardous materials, documentation of train movements, the reporting of rule violations, etc.
  • Listen to staff concerns, diffuse or correct those concerns professionally and efficiently.
  • Implement and train dispatchers on changes in the department anytime they occur.
  • Help plan scheduling for train operations based on customer needs and traffic flow.
  • Will directly be in charge of the crossing malfunction signal desk.  Keeping all documents in compliance for the FRA audits.  Making sure the signal maintainers answer and respond to calls in a timely manner.
  • Reporting all malfunctions to the proper persons in charge of monitoring, repairs and ordering   parts for all repairs of crossings.
  • Responsible for training and new implementation of new policies and procurers and upgrades to the system.
  • Complete and continue daily turnover notes with any information regarding special instructions or changes made throughout the shift.
  • Scheduling, testing, payroll, accident documentation.
