Duties and Responsibilities
- Reports to Gang Foreman to obtain schedule and work instructions.
- Longshore in hold may be required to communicate via handheld radio.
- May be required to handle tools and/or lashing materials.
- May be required to place or remove dunnage including but not limited to under blades, buckets, or other attachments that would rest on transport surface.
- Must remain clear of all suspended loads while loading and discharge operations.
- May use a push broom to sweep discarded materials to the designated area.
- May use locking poles to disengage locks at corners of containers.
- May place deck shoes (4-4.8 lbs.) on the floor of a bay in the vessel to sit containers on.
- May be required to hook and unhook lifting gear.
- Know the fundamentals of rigging and slinging.
- Utilizes rigging/slinging to load and unload containers, steel commodities, project cargo and bulk material.
- Able to operate forklifts.
- Be able to dismantle and store rigging/slinging equipment after use.
- Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and cargo.
- Know the Crane hand signals.
- Must be able to follow all safety guidelines.
Vessel Access
- Climbs up or down the gangway to access the vessel. (46 – 60 steps; varies for each vessel depending on the height of vessel and water level). Handrails are located on each side of the gangway at waist height.
- Climbs up or down vertical ladders aboard the vessel.
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Required.
Required Safety Gear must be worn at all times to include
- Safety vest, safety glasses, steeled-toe shoes, and hard hats must be worn on the terminal or in the yard.
