Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Mechanic) reports directly to the Shop Manager or designated supervisor and is responsible for performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy motive equipment. The Mechanic will support daily operations by ensuring equipment is safe, compliant, and functioning efficiently in alignment with Watco policies, procedures, and applicable regulations. The Mechanic will utilize a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and technology to ensure repairs and preventive maintenance tasks are completed on time and to standard. The Equipment Mechanic must maintain accurate service records, effectively communicate with team members and leadership, and exhibit sound judgment and technical expertise in both routine and complex maintenance tasks. The Mechanic will also support environmental and safety protocols, assist in maintaining proper inventory levels, and contribute to a collaborative and productive team environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform maintenance and repair of heavy motive equipment in accordance with company and safety standards.
• Accurately record hour meter readings for inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
• Collect and document lube oil and cooling water samples for analysis.
• Operate various equipment as needed to complete tasks, including truck cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting tools.
• Utilize laptop and diagnostic tools to support maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area; ensure equipment and tools are properly stored and maintained.
• Set up and operate grinders and other metalworking tools to fabricate or repair parts using appropriate measuring instruments such as rules, calipers, and micrometers.
• Use hand and power tools related to mechanical repair duties, including impacts, wrenches, and hose machines.
• Follow all safety protocols and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes hard hat, safety glasses, splash goggles, face shield, reflective clothing, flame-resistant (FR) garments as required, gloves, steel-toed metatarsal boots, and any additional PPE required by the job or site conditions.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
• Must be able to pass and/or obtain all required reporting, testing, and certifications for the position and location.
• The following requirements represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Driver's License may be required
• Required to successfully complete all required safety training
• Able to become A/C certified if requested
• Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card
