Job Summary

The Assistant General Manager supports coordination of efforts between all railroad departments. The Assistant General Manager assists with supervising the leadership team to achieve performance goals with optimum safety, economic, efficiency, and effectiveness ensuring profitability of all departments. The Assistant General Manager will have the responsibility of helping to control expenses in all areas of the railroad. They will be accountable to ensure all company policies and procedures are followed by team members in their charge and that all are administered fairly and equitably.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Help manage, direct, and provide insight and training to all departments within the railroad  
• Help establish and adhere to operating budgets by reviewing annual projections, forecasts, historical data, and department manager input to meet quantitative and financial measurement goals  
• Help establish performance goals and quality standards to monitor both quality and quantity of all facets of the railroad to ensure profitability and efficiency•Teach, train, develop and mentor leadership team to ensure proficiency within positions and preparedness for advancement 
• Manage and ensure a positive relationship between all customers including but not limited to our other railroad partners, freight customers, contractors, and municipalities• Ensure customer satisfaction through personal contact, developing professional relationships and managing systems to provide accurate accountability of railcar location, car hire, demurrage, receivables, timely & efficient railcar movements 
• Analyze railroad asset utilization and evaluate railroad operations   
• Assist with establishing, monitoring, and ensuring the completion of capital improvement projects
• Help develop, support, and periodically review operating procedures for all railroad activities 
• Support safety and environmental law compliance including company policies and procedures
• Help prepare and administer performance appraisals
• Support the implementation of succession planning and team development
• Assist with the selection, training, and development of departmental managers and first line supervisors
• Review results of internal and external audits conducted on the railroad to provide training and support, ensuring continuous improvement
• Help ensure accurate and timely reporting for all state, federal and regulatory entities
• Respond promptly to all accidents, incidents, or emergency calls and assist with investigating the contributing factors and root cause
• Conduct efficiency testing, assist with internal and external investigations, and monitor safe working practices
• Help interview and hire for open positions
• Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance 
• Learn General Manager responsibilities and fill vacancy as needed 
• Help supervise and coordinate activities of the management team  
• Train switch crews and other yard personnel to perform job-related duties; and to provide training related to federal and company regulations, rules, safety guidelines, and preventive maintenance 
• Analyze operational, safety, and financial data and present past, present and future trends using Excel, PowerPoint, and verbal communication
• Performs other duties as assigned or required  

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must be able to pass and obtain all reporting, testing, and certifications as required for this position. 
Must have a valid driver’s license
Minimum of 5 years of job-related experience or combination of education and experience.
