Job Summary
The mule driver (also known as a Yard Jockey or Yard Tractor Operator) operates a specialized vehicle to move trailers on a dock, in yard, or warehouse, positioning them for loading and unloading. Their duties include safely maneuvering trailers, spotting them at docks, inspecting the vehicle, communicating with operations leadership and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the yard.
Pay: $19/hr
Must be able to work 12-hours shifts on both day and night schedules.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Obtains instructions from Superintendents and Clerks regarding work plans
• Performs inspections to include conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the yard vehicle and trailers to insure they are safe and functional
• Moves trailers safely and efficiently from staging areas to loading/unloading areas
• Spots trailers in accordance with operational plans to assist with efficient cargo moves
• Communicates as needed in a clear concise manner with other team members
• Utilizes chains and straps to secure items for transport
• Required Safety Gear must be worn at all times to include Safety vest, safety glasses, steeled-toe shoes, and hard hats must be worn on terminal or in yard.
• Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Previous experience driving yard vehicles
Able to follow written and verbal instructions and complete tasks on time
Adheres to all safety protocols and promotes a clean, orderly work environment
Physically able to bend, stoop, climb, twist, and lift up to 40 pounds
Able to communicate clearly with team members, vendors, and customers
Able to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and an on-call basis as needed
Valid Driver License
TWIC Card or the ability to obtain one
