Purchasing Manager – Commodities & Services
Reports To:    Director - Project Purchasing    

Department:    Purchasing & Materials
Salary Range:    Dependent upon Experience    

Status:    Exempt

 

Summary


Drive the sourcing strategy for railroad infrastructure related materials & services.  Proactively engage with internal and external business partners to achieve financial & non-financial targets while delivering long term strategic value to Watco.  Support daily operations to ensure availability of supply and effective services.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

•    Develop, manage, and implement comprehensive sourcing strategies for track related materials & services, including rail, ties, ballast, bridge materials, track inspection, construction services & vegetation management
•    Negotiate long term agreements with critical supplier partners that provide strategic value to Watco
•    Manage supplier relationships to support innovation, meet operational needs, and ensure compliance with Watco values and expectations
•    Develop actionable market and supply base knowledge to anticipate opportunities & risks along with safeguarding supply & services
•    Collaborate with Project Management and Operations teams to ensure purchasing strategies are aligned with project goals & strategies, including timelines, budget, inventories, and expenses.
•    Grade supplier performance based on adherence to commitments and issue resolution
•    Support daily purchasing activities, including order tracking & expediting
•    Obtain spot quotations for new and existing parts and services, as required 
•    Confer with suppliers and Accounts Payable personnel to resolve materials and supplier invoicing issues, such as damages, quality issues, and incorrect price, parts, or quantity
•    Other duties, responsibilities, and projects as requested

•    Knowledge of purchasing, inventory control, and service agreements/contracts
•    Knowledge of railroad operations and best practices

 

Education and Experience

 

•    College degree required
•    Minimum 2 to 4 years of experience in purchasing, logistics or inventory management
•    Previous experience purchasing railroad related materials & services a huge plus
•    Ability to effectively present facts and recommendations in oral and written form
•    Experience with purchasing and business systems is a plus, i.e. SAP, Coupa

 

Work Environment

 

•    Travel is required approximately 20% of time
•    The team member in this Position is required to lift/exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
